Psychologists Highlight Pitfalls of Online Dating

A new study published in the upcoming issue of Psychological Science in the Public Interest is shedding light on the science – or lack thereof – behind online dating services. The psychological scientists who wrote the report hope to indentify how online dating might be hurting singles. Co-written by Eli J. Finkel Northwestern University , Paul W. Reis University of Rochester , and Susan Sprecher Illinois State University , the report reviews over psychology studies and surveys. So, what’s the problem? Scientists worry that dating sites claim to use exclusive “matching algorithms,” which may be nothing more than a guessing game. In fact, our report concludes that it is unlikely that their algorithms can work, even in principle, given the limitations of the sorts of matching procedures that these sites use. You don’t actually get to chose.

The word science comes from a Latin word scientica, which means knowledge, or information. Science is a process of systematically gathering detailed information and gaining exact knowledge. We do not know all the “life” information secrets but we are learning more every day.

According to a study by Rochester University, if you’re relying on the “scientific matching” algorithms of the big, swaddled-in-romance dating sites, you’re not doing yourself any favors. In fact, the most effective matching method is still physical attraction.

Walton Internet dating is now one of the top methods for finding love. But whether the pros outweigh the cons is another story. For many years, online dating had a bit of a stigma attached to it. Its likeness to personal ads may have been a little too close for comfort, and Americans were hesitant to embrace it. But there are some pitfalls that come with the practice.

Although Internet dating can be a helpful tool for some people, the authors caution that there are some drawbacks to the online dating world. Approximately 25 million unique users around the globe visited online dating sites in the month of April alone, according to the study. Internet dating has become the second most-used method of dating, barring only meeting new people through friends. For one thing, emailing for a long period of time before meeting in person can create unrealistic expectations of what the personal will actually be like.

Finally, the study found no evidence that the algorithms the sites use to make matches had been evaluated independently in peer-review journals or anywhere else. Harry Reis is a researcher at the University of Rochester, and published his study in the February issue of Psychological Science in the Public Interest.

The question of why this particular designation is needed surfaces frequently and the simplest explanation is that the presence of women in the national historical narrative went unnoted in schools for centuries. Today, historians focus attention on previously marginalized groups in history to provide a more thorough and balanced image of the past. The narratives of local history are often filled with the stories of white men who made their mark on early settlements and only infrequently do we hear the stories of women such as Elizabeth Gilbert and Polly Burgess who braved the virgin forests of Western New York.

A printer by trade, John Denio became a respected citizen of Albion due in part to his time as publisher of the Orleans American. As a young girl, Elizabeth attended the local schools but as the daughter of a prominent family, she was afforded the opportunity to attend the Phipps Union Seminary. Low Levels of Alcohol Good for the Brain Friday, February 02, Tweet While a couple of glasses of red wine can help clear the mind after a busy day, new research shows that it may actually help clean the mind as well. While excessive consumption of alcohol is a well-documented health hazard, many studies have linked lower levels of drinking with a reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases as well as a number of cancers.

Subsequent research has shown that the glymphatic system is more active while we sleep , can be damaged by stroke and trauma, and improves with exercise. The new study, which was conducted in mice, looked at the impact of both acute and chronic alcohol exposure. When they studied the brains of animals exposed to high levels of alcohol over a long period of time, the researchers observed high levels of a molecular marker for inflammation, particularly in cells called astrocytes which are key regulators of the glymphatic system.

This study may help explain why this occurs. Specifically, low doses of alcohol appear to benefit overall brain health.
